All of us like to watch movies of varied genres like comedy, romance, mystery etc. But we also need a little scare once in a while. All horror movies might not give you the perfect chills and might even seem a little boring. Some horror movie might even seem a little childish. There is no adrenalin rush and no thrill, but I have picked up the best Indian-horror I could find in my collection! This post will be a detailed review of the movie. After reading this blog, you will know if this movie is the one for you or not. So, lets not waste time beating around the bush and dive right in!
How many Indian horror movies have you watched? Most of them have the cliché horror stuff. All there is is the door creaking, the sound of the 'Payal' and of course, a lady in a white saree. Don't worry, the one I will review today is different, and also better!
The movie I will be reviewing today is called Tumbbad. ‘Tumbbad’ is the name of a village in western Maharashtra. The story shown in the movie is not true, but the village is. In order to understand the movie’s plot, we need to understand the legend it is based on. There is no proof of this legend / myth being true or not as there is no mention of it in Hindu mythology. In the movie, it is shown as a Hindu legend.
So, lets understand the backstory,
Prologue
The goddess of prosperity, a source of endless gold and grain, gave birth to sixteen crore [ 160 million ] Hindu gods and goddesses, But the goddess of prosperity loved her firstborn son, Hastar, the most. But Hastar’s intentions were far from noble. He was greedy and wanted all of his mother’s gold and grain for himself. He took all the gold but as soon as he tried to steal the grain, all the other gods attacked him. A mother’s love compelled the goddess of prosperity to save her child but there was one condition, no one shall worship him as a god and his name shall never be written in any religious texts. Thousands of years later, the people of Tumbbad remembered him and created a temple in his name. The other gods were not happy with this. Since then, it never stops raining in the village. It is said this is because of the anger of the gods.
This is the myth as shown in the movie. Let's get to the main plot, but before that, let's take a look at the movie’s cast.
The cast
Soham Shah and Dhundiraj Prabhakar as Vinayak Rao.
Jyoti Mashe as Vinayak’s mother
Rudra Soni as Sadashiv
Mohommad Samad as Pandurang
Deepak Damle as Raghav
Rojini Chakraborty as Vinayak’s mistress
Anita Date as Vinayak’s wife
The Plot
The story revolves around ‘greed’ which has been carried on since generations in the protagonist, Vinayak Rao’s family. It is set in early 20th century India. Vinayak Rao lives with his mother and his younger brother. There is one more member in his house, his great-great grandmother. Why has she not died? Because she has the curse of Hastar. She is immortal but it is a life worse than death. The demon-like woman has to be fed by the family everyday. Soon, his family leaves Tumbbad. In the next chapter, The greed of the ‘treasure’ brings him back to his village ‘Tumbbad’ to find the treasure after he is grown up. He toils hard for the quest to find the long lost treasure. Little did he know that the path would be full of horrors. Soon, he becomes rich. No one knows where he brings all the gold from. Not even his friend Raghav. He lives more lavishly than ever before. He has all the comfort in the world. How long will it last? Will the outcome be favorable? You shall see for yourself.
The Review
Tumbbad is an amazingly implemented horror film directed by Anand Gandhi and Rahi Anil Barve. The story is very interesting and gripping. Unlike many other Indian horror movies, this one has the most unique plot and amazing cinematography. As nothing is perfect, this movie has a few minus points too. There are some scenes which might make one a little squeamish. You can skip the gross scenes but that might take a little fun out of the movie so I suggest not skipping them. They are not prolonged and usually last just 4 to 5 seconds. Tumbbad is definitely not a family movie. I would not recommend the movie for children below 13 years. You might think, is the movie too long? No! It is only 90 minutes and the plot picks up pace fast so it does not seem boring at any point. Is there any inappropriate and strong language? No, thankfully, Tumbbad is pretty much clean and the age restriction is only because of the dark theme of the movie. Are the actors good? Yes! Each actor has played their roles well and nothing seems out of the plot. Is there any good music? In my opinion, the only song which is the title track is not that great. But the background score composed by Jasper Kyd will definitely send chills down your spine! I would say that the movie is worth a watch but one might not want to binge with those bloody scenes. Other than that, a must watch!
Today’s music recommendation.
Today’s music recommendation is for those who are into sweet and religious songs. The song is from the movie ‘Jodha Akbar’ and is called ‘Man Mohana’. The song is about the Hindu god krishna. It is a sweet melody anyone would enjoy, check it out!
Stay tuned for the next post!
Thank you!
